Family history research
If your family originated in Catania or elsewhere in the province, I can investigate your ancestry using civil registration records, parish registers and other historical sources. I review the information you already have, identify the records most relevant to your family and trace relationships that can be supported by documentary evidence.
I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. Based in eastern Sicily, I carry out genealogy research throughout the island for clients in Italy and abroad. You do not need to travel to Sicily to commission a search.
My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Catania

Throughout my professional career, I have conducted numerous genealogy research projects involving families from the province of Catania, developing extensive familiarity with its communities, historical records and local administrative history.
My research has included Giarre, Acireale, Riposto, Mascali, Piedimonte Etneo and Linguaglossa, as well as Catania, Santa Venerina, Zafferana Etnea and smaller communities such as San Giovanni Montebello and Macchia di Giarre.
Reconstructing a family history often means tracing ancestors through different towns and parishes. Someone might have been born in one place, married in another and later moved with their family. Understanding changes in municipal and ecclesiastical jurisdictions helps identify the appropriate records and establish connections between generations.
My work includes both multi-generation family tree research and targeted searches for individual birth, marriage and death records. Each project begins with the available information and develops through the examination of relevant historical sources.
I offer these services throughout the province of Catania, including for descendants living overseas who want to document their Sicilian ancestry.
Where Are Catania Genealogy Records Kept?
Civil Registration Records
Birth, marriage and death records are often the starting point for reconstructing families in the nineteenth century and later. Depending on the record, they may identify parents, spouses, ages, residences and other details that help connect generations.
The State Archive of Catania holds a civil registration collection for municipalities in the province with overall dates of 1820–1893. Coverage varies by municipality; for the city of Catania, the pre-unification portion of this collection covers 1841–1865. The Municipal Historical Archive of Catania holds a separate collection with overall dates of 1820–1905.
For some municipalities, including those around Caltagirone, relevant records may be held by different institutions. The location of a historical event does not, by itself, establish which archive currently holds its record.
Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives
When a family line extends beyond the surviving civil registration records, ecclesiastical sources may provide baptisms, marriages and burials, as well as, in some collections, parish censuses (stati delle anime) and marriage-related documentation.
Relevant collections are associated with the Archdiocese of Catania, the Diocese of Acireale and the Diocese of Caltagirone. FamilySearch describes parish record collections with earliest dates of 1515, 1560 and 1502, respectively. These dates refer to the collections as a whole, not to uninterrupted coverage for every parish.
The research plan therefore depends on the exact locality, historical period and actual access conditions.
Other Historical Sources
Marriage supporting documents, military draft lists, municipal archives and other record series may provide additional evidence. I assess their relevance and accessibility according to the goals of each investigation.
Historical Marriage Record Indexing in Eastern Sicily
Alongside commissioned research, Sicilian Ancestry maintains an ongoing project to index historical marriage records from communities around Mount Etna and the Ionian coast.
The project includes places such as Giarre, Mascali, Riposto, Aci Catena, Aci Castello, San Giovanni Montebello and Nunziata, among other parish communities. Indexing helps organize information found in registers and makes it easier to identify entries that can then be checked against the original records.
The Records & Indexes page provides the published coverage and counts. This project is not a publicly searchable name database, and the inclusion of a locality does not mean every year has been indexed.

Family Tree Research
Starting with an identified ancestor, I can investigate earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by the available records. Standard research packages provide different levels of depth and, according to the sources found, deliver a research report, family tree and digital copies of original documents.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents
You can commission a search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if the date is approximate. When official documents are required, I can identify the responsible municipal office, prepare requests and check the documents received.
A dedicated documentary service is available for Italian citizenship applications. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research
If you have already researched part of your family history, you can request a focused investigation into one person, family, register or locality without commissioning an entire family tree. The work may involve digitized material, correspondence with repositories and, when appropriate and feasible, on-site archival research.
How to Start Your Catania Family History Research
For an initial assessment, send me the ancestor's name, an exact or approximate date and the town of origin, if known. Parents' names, emigration records and earlier family research can also be helpful.
If you know only that your family came from the province of Catania, share the clues you have. I will assess whether they support a focused search or whether a broader preliminary investigation is needed. We will agree on the scope, cost and terms before work begins; standard family-tree package terms do not automatically apply to specialized or single-record searches.
You can commission and follow the research from abroad without arranging archival visits yourself.
