Historical Sicilian Place Names in Genealogy Research

Identifying ancestral towns and historical place names

An ancestor's place of origin is one of the most important details in Sicilian genealogy. Yet a place appearing
in an old document may differ from its present-day name, or it may refer to a settlement rather than an independent municipality. A modern province is not necessarily the administrative unit used when the record was created.

These distinctions affect where birth, marriage, death and parish records should be searched. They also help prevent families with similar names in neighboring communities from being combined incorrectly.

Historical names that still appear in records

Several Sicilian places have well-established older names. Girgenti refers to the city now named Agrigento; Castrogiovanni to Enna; Spaccaforno to Ispica; Biscari to Acate; and Terranova di Sicilia to present-day Gela.

A historical name can appear on a document prepared before an official change, or be repeated in an overseas record prepared later. It is useful to preserve the original wording in your research notes rather than silently replacing it.

Not all apparently similar names have a single unambiguous location. Terms such as Vallelunga or Santa Margherita can refer to different places or require contextual evidence. The correct identification depends on the date, surrounding names and the administrative or parish references in the source.

Provinces, towns and smaller communities

A passenger manifest naming Palermo, Messina or Trapani may refer to the city or a broader geographic area. The field heading matters: birthplace, last residence and port of departure represent different facts.

Within Sicily, a family may have lived in a frazione (a smaller settlement within a municipality) or a parish community whose name appears prominently in church records. For example, San Giovanni Montebello and Macchia di Giarre are communities associated with the modern municipality of Giarre. The appropriate register must be determined for the date in question.

Civil and church jurisdictions may differ

The civil municipality responsible for registration and the parish recording a sacrament are not necessarily located in the same administrative unit. Diocesan territories have also changed. Research into an older marriage should therefore identify the parish and its record location rather than assuming the municipality's civil archives contain the ecclesiastical act.

For a town whose modern provincial affiliation was established only later, records may have been organized historically under another province or administrative district. This is particularly relevant to research in the area now associated with Enna.

A practical method for identifying a historical location

First, transcribe the place name exactly as it appears in the document, including abbreviations. Record the document's date and whether the field refers to birth, residence, marriage or departure. Next, compare possible identifications using known relatives, neighboring locations and historical administrative information.

Only then select the archive or parish register. When there are multiple plausible locations, the uncertainty should remain visible until one is supported by documents.

Research across multiple Sicilian communities

Family members did not necessarily live in one town for generations. A marriage can connect nearby communities, and subsequent events may appear in a different municipality. Comparing records from separate localities is sometimes necessary to establish a continuous documented family line.

Sicilian Ancestry undertakes genealogical research throughout Sicily. If your family documents contain a historical place name or an uncertain municipality, include the exact spelling and the surrounding information in your enquiry.
