Family history research
If your ancestors came from Trapani or another municipality in the province, I can investigate their family history through civil and parish records, historical documents and, when necessary, requests to the institutions responsible for those records.
I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. I live and work in eastern Sicily and provide genealogical research throughout the island for clients in Italy and abroad. You do not need to visit the archives in person to commission a search.
My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Trapani

Over the years I have researched family histories rooted in the province of Trapani, working on connections across coastal towns, inland communities and several generations of ancestors.
My research has particularly involved Castellammare del Golfo, Alcamo, Marsala and Trapani, as well as Salemi, Castelvetrano, Campobello di Mazara, Mazara del Vallo, Gibellina and Calatafimi. I have also carried out documentary research connected with Erice and other towns in the province.
When a family lived in different communities, its birth, marriage and death entries may be preserved in several sets of municipal or parish records. Identifying the correct municipality and comparing the names of parents, spouses and children helps distinguish people with similar names and establish more reliable family relationships.
My services include reconstructing family trees over several generations, researching emigrant ancestors and locating individual historical or official records. I can also continue a family history that has already been started when additional evidence is needed.
I carry out genealogical research throughout the province of Trapani, including for descendants living overseas.
Where Are Trapani Genealogy Records Kept?
Civil Registration Records
The State Archive of Trapani holds the collection known as the Civil Registration Records of the Municipalities of the Province of Trapani, with overall dates of 1820–1928 according to Italy’s State Archives Information System (SIAS). This date range describes the collection as a whole; it does not guarantee continuous coverage for every municipality.
For Trapani itself, the SIUSA archival information system describes a municipal collection of birth, marriage, death and other registers with overall dates of 1820–2008. Official certificates and extracts are issued through the appropriate municipal authorities; the existence of a historical copy in an archive does not change that responsibility.
Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives
Earlier generations may be documented in parish registers and ecclesiastical archives, including those of the Diocese of Trapani and the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo. The municipality of origin and historical period determine which parish or diocesan jurisdiction is relevant.
Church records may contain baptisms, marriages and burials. Not every collection has been digitized, and access conditions can vary.
Other Historical Sources
Marriage supporting documents, notarial acts, military draft lists and land records can sometimes help establish relationships that are unclear in standard civil registration records, or allow research to continue into earlier periods.
The best approach differs between inland and coastal communities. I select the records to be examined according to the evidence already available and the specific family-history question.
From Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo to Marsala
When an emigration record gives only “Trapani,” it may refer to the province rather than the city. For an ancestor associated with Alcamo, Castellammare del Golfo, Castelvetrano or Marsala, identifying the correct municipal Civil Registry Office is a necessary first step.
If the exact date is unknown, indexes and neighboring entries may be investigated within a reasonable time range. An identical name is not enough to assign a record to a particular family without corroborating details.

Genealogy Services in the Province of Trapani

Family Tree Research
Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents
You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.
For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research
If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.
How to Start Your Trapani Family History Research
Send the ancestor’s full name, an approximate period, the town or area of origin and, if known, the names of their parents or spouse. Information from United States or other overseas records may help clarify a birthplace or residence listed only as “Trapani.”
I define the research objectives and likely sources before agreeing on the fee and terms. There is no need to travel to Sicily to arrange the work.
