If your family originated in Siracusa or another town in its province, I can trace documented family connections through civil registration records, parish sources and historical archives in the area.

I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. Based in eastern Sicily, I conduct genealogical research throughout the island for clients in Italy and abroad. You do not need to visit the archives yourself to commission the work.

My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Siracusa

I have researched families from the province of Siracusa, including the city, inland communities and towns along Sicily’s southeastern coast.

My work has involved Augusta, Siracusa, Buscemi, Palazzolo Acreide, Pachino and Noto, as well as Sortino, Rosolini, Floridia and Canicattini Bagni. I have also undertaken documentary searches connected with Carlentini and Portopalo di Capo Passero.

Over several generations, a family may have moved from one
municipality to another, leaving records of different events in different places. In the Siracusa area, identifying the correct civil and parish sources also means taking historical jurisdictions into account, especially for families associated with Noto.

My experience includes family tree reconstruction, verification of particular family relationships and searches for birth, marriage and death records. I build each investigation around the known evidence and the sources that can establish the links between generations.

I provide genealogy research throughout the province of Siracusa for clients in Sicily and descendants living overseas.

Where Are Siracusa Genealogy Records Kept?

Civil Registration Records

The State Archive of Siracusa holds civil registration collections relating to communities in the province. The Noto branch of the State Archive is particularly relevant for research into Noto and its historical district. Institutional descriptions identify civil registration records beginning in 1820 and district collections extending to 1899.

SIAS also describes another complex of records associated with the Noto area, with overall dates of 1894–2001, held at the State Archive of Siracusa and noted as undergoing reorganization. These are overall collection dates, not a guarantee that every year’s records are available. Official extracts must be requested through the appropriate municipal Civil Registry Office.

Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives

For research before 1820, parish registers may be essential. Depending on the place and period, the Archdiocese of Siracusa and the Diocese of Noto are among the relevant ecclesiastical jurisdictions. The parish where a baptism or marriage took place may differ from the place later cited in an emigration record.

I examine the records available for the particular community and their access conditions. An early date for a diocesan collection does not mean that all parish registers have survived.

Other Historical Sources

The Noto branch also holds records from older local administrations, notarial collections and other sources predating or accompanying civil registration. Marriage supporting documents, military draft lists and material relating to historical districts may be valuable in more complex investigations.

I select supplementary sources according to the identity already established and the question to be resolved, rather than searching every collection without a defined purpose.

Siracusa and the Val di Noto: Finding the Correct Archive

An ancestor from Augusta or Carlentini will not necessarily be documented in the same collections as someone from Noto, Pachino, Palazzolo Acreide or Rosolini. Each family’s records need to be traced through the archives relevant to its own community.

When an overseas record mentions “Siracusa,” I establish whether it refers to the city or the province. If it names a town within the historical Noto district, I plan the archival research accordingly.

Genealogy Services in the Province of Siracusa

Family Tree Research

Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents

You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.

For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research

If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.

How to Start Your Siracusa Family History Research

For an initial assessment, provide the ancestor’s full name, an exact or approximate year and the town of origin. For Noto, Pachino, Palazzolo Acreide or other municipalities, mention any parish, hamlet or older place name appearing in family documents.

I identify priority sources from the initial information and propose a scope of work, fee and terms. You can commission and follow the research from abroad.
