Family history research
If your ancestors came from Ragusa or another municipality in the province, I can investigate your family history through civil records, parish registers and historical archives. Research is based on the surviving evidence and the jurisdictions in which events were originally recorded.
I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. I work from eastern Sicily and undertake genealogical research across the island for clients in Italy and overseas. You can arrange your research remotely.
My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Ragusa

My professional genealogical work includes families originating in the province of Ragusa, with family connections documented in communities across the Hyblaean area of southeastern Sicily.
I have researched families associated with Vittoria, Comiso, Scicli, Ragusa and Modica, as well as the places now called Ispica and Acate, which may appear in historical documents under their former names, Spaccaforno and Biscari.
To identify an ancestor reliably, it is important to establish where and when each birth, marriage or death was registered. This is particularly relevant for families that moved between municipalities or whose records use historical place names rather than current ones.
I offer multi-generation family tree research, verification of specific kinship links and searches for civil or parish records. Each project begins with the available family information and follows the evidence through the relevant sources.
My services cover the entire province of Ragusa, including for people living abroad who wish to document their Sicilian family history.
Where Are Ragusa Genealogy Records Kept?
Civil Registration Records
The State Archive of Ragusa holds a civil registration collection for municipalities in the Ragusa area, with overall dates of 1820–1899, as described by Italy’s State Archives Information System. The archive provides genealogy-related information and directs researchers to the Antenati Portal for digitized historical records.
The province also has a Modica branch of the State Archive. The two repositories preserve different collections, so civil registers and notarial material should not be assumed to be in the same building. For official certified records and later periods, the appropriate municipal office must be contacted.
Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives
Research before 1820 may require parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. Depending on the town and historical period, relevant church jurisdictions include the Diocese of Ragusa and the Diocese of Noto. Modern diocesan boundaries do not necessarily reflect those of earlier centuries.
The location and accessibility of ecclesiastical records must be established through the relevant parish or diocesan archive, with attention to changes in parish names and any transfer of collections.
Other Historical Sources
The Modica branch preserves important historical material, including records associated with the County of Modica, notarial archives, municipal records and documents from suppressed religious institutions. These collections can extend a well-defined genealogical investigation into earlier centuries.
Notarial and administrative records differ from civil registration acts. They are most useful when there is a specific family relationship or historical circumstance that the evidence could help document.
Spaccaforno, Biscari and the Historical Geography of Ragusa
In nineteenth-century records, Ispica may appear as Spaccaforno, a name retained until 1935. Similarly, records relating to present-day Acate may use the former name Biscari. Knowing both forms is important when searching archival catalogues and indexes.
The province of Ragusa was established in the twentieth century. For earlier events, a town now in the province may have belonged to another administrative district. I therefore locate each record according to the municipality and archival collection relevant at the time of the event.

Genealogy Services in the Province of Ragusa

Family Tree Research
Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents
You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.
For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research
If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.
How to Start Your Ragusa Family History Research
Send the ancestor’s name, a date or approximate period and any known municipality of origin. If the family documents mention Spaccaforno, Biscari, Ispica or Acate, include the wording as it appears in the source.
I then assess the available civil, parish and historical records, define the research objective and agree on costs and terms before the investigation begins.
