If your family came from Messina, another municipality in the province or the Aeolian Islands, I can investigate your ancestry through civil registration, parish registers and other historical sources. The research begins with what you already know and takes account of the different communities and institutions that may hold relevant records.

I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. Based in eastern Sicily, I carry out genealogical research throughout the island for clients in Italy and abroad. You can commission a search without visiting Sicily yourself.

My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Messina

I have researched families from many parts of the province of Messina, including the city, the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coastlines, villages in the Nebrodi Mountains and the Aeolian Islands.

My previous work has involved Naso, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Montalbano Elicona and Castroreale, together with Messina, Piraino, Roccalumera, Gioiosa Marea and Mistretta. I have also undertaken documentary searches concerning Milazzo, Lipari, Cesarò and Santa Marina di Salina.

The Messina area includes communities with separate civil and parish archives. When ancestors lived in several municipalities or moved between the mainland and the islands, each event needs to be located in the appropriate set of records and compared with evidence from other generations.

My work covers multi-generation family trees, investigations into particular family branches and searches for birth, marriage and death acts. Each project is planned around the information available and the repositories relevant to the historical period.

I provide these services throughout the province of Messina, including the Aeolian Islands, for clients living in Italy or abroad.

Where Are Messina Genealogy Records Kept?

Civil Registration Records

The State Archive of Messina reports holding civil registration records dating from 1820 to 1865. For this period, the Antenati Portal provides access to records concerning Messina, its villages and municipalities historically associated with the province. The archive advises researchers to identify the place and the approximate date or year of an event to narrow the search.

For later periods, the appropriate municipal offices and any other available archival collections must be checked. If a register is absent from a digitized series, I investigate whether another copy, index or repository may exist rather than assuming the record was destroyed.

Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives

Parish registers are central to many investigations before 1820. Depending on the locality and period, relevant church jurisdictions include the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela and the Diocese of Patti. Ecclesiastical boundaries have changed over time and do not necessarily match today's provincial boundaries.

Baptism and marriage entries may help identify parents or grandparents. Marriage-related files and other ecclesiastical sources, where preserved, can clarify origins and earlier residences. Availability must be checked parish by parish.

Other Historical Sources

Given the province's varied geography, useful supplementary sources can differ between urban communities, inland towns and islands. Military draft lists, notarial records, municipal archives and family documents may provide evidence not found in a single civil act.

For ancestors who emigrated from the Tyrrhenian coast or the Aeolian Islands, the place recorded abroad needs to be compared with the actual birthplace. “Messina” on an emigration document does not necessarily identify the municipality holding the original record.

Genealogy Research in the Aeolian Islands and the Messina Area

Families associated with Lipari require different local searches from families originating on Salina, where it is important to distinguish Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina di Salina. Similarly, a family history involving Naso, Piraino and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto may require consulting separate records for each event.

I document connections between localities when the sources support them. A shared surname alone is not sufficient evidence that two individuals belong to the same family.

Family Tree Research

Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents

You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.

For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research

If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.

How to Start Your Messina Family History Research

For an initial assessment, the most useful details are the town or village of origin, an approximate date and the parents' names. For the Aeolian Islands, specify the island and, where possible, the particular municipality or settlement; “Aeolian Islands” does not identify a single register.

I assess whether a focused search is possible and which digital, municipal or parish sources are likely to be relevant. You receive the proposed scope, terms and fees before work begins.
