Family history research

Home · Services · Enna

If you are researching a family from Enna or another municipality in its province, I can investigate historical civil and parish records to establish documentary connections across generations. Changes in place names and administrative boundaries are considered when identifying the correct archives.

I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. Based in eastern Sicily, I carry out genealogy research throughout the island for clients in Italy and abroad. You can commission the work remotely.

My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Enna

Throughout my professional genealogical work, I have researched families from several communities in the province of Enna, with particular attention to identifying ancestors accurately in historical registers.

My previous projects have involved Nicosia, Valguarnera Caropepe, Assoro, Troina, Leonforte and Cerami, as well as Enna, Agira, Villarosa and Barrafranca. I have also undertaken documentary research involving Aidone and local Civil Registry Offices.

For ancestors from central Sicily, historical administrative changes can have a direct effect on where records are found. Present-day Enna was formerly known as Castrogiovanni, and municipalities now in the province once belonged to other administrative districts. Understanding these changes helps identify the correct sources and interpret locations given in family or emigration documents.

I undertake family tree reconstruction, research into specific ancestral branches and searches for birth, marriage and death
records. Investigations may start from an identified ancestor or from incomplete family information.

I provide these services throughout the province of Enna, including to clients outside Sicily and abroad.

Where Are Enna Genealogy Records Kept?

Civil Registration Records

According to SIAS, the State Archive of Enna holds civil registration collections with overall dates of 1820–1960. Coverage varies by municipality: the described collection includes Aidone and Enna from 1820, while principal series listed for Agira, Nicosia, Assoro and Troina begin in 1866.

For pre-1866 records relating to municipalities in the former Nicosia district, other series and earlier archival transfers need to be considered. Some documents relating to localities now in Enna province were transferred from the State Archive of Catania to Enna in 2013.

The collection’s ending date does not mean that every municipality has an uninterrupted sequence through 1960. Official extracts remain the responsibility of the appropriate municipal office.

Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives

Parish records are often essential for research before civil registration. Depending on the municipality, records may fall within the historical jurisdictions of the Diocese of Nicosia, the Diocese of Piazza Armerina or particular local parishes.

The Diocesan Historical Archive of Nicosia publishes a procedure for requesting access to its documents. Consultation needs to be arranged and cannot be assumed to be unrestricted. The appropriate ecclesiastical authority must be identified for the period under investigation.

Other Historical Sources

Marriage supporting documents, notarial acts, military records and municipal collections can provide additional evidence. In a complex investigation, it may be important to determine whether the relevant records originated in the former districts of Piazza Armerina or Nicosia, which have different archival histories.

The Antenati Portal and digitized collections can support an initial review. Where a series is incomplete, other repositories and sources need to be considered before concluding that the original act has not survived.

Castrogiovanni, Nicosia and Piazza Armerina in Historical Records

An ancestor born in present-day Enna may be described in an older document as being from Castrogiovanni. Both names should be considered alongside the date of the event. Similarly, today’s province alone does not establish the historical jurisdiction of Nicosia, Agira or Piazza Armerina.

Where several individuals have the same name, I compare parents, spouses, ages and residences to avoid assigning records to the wrong family.

Family Tree Research

Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents

You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.

For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research

If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.

How to Start Your Enna Family History Research

For an initial assessment, share the ancestor’s name, a year or approximate date, the locality of origin and any known parents or spouses. Old documents that mention “Castrogiovanni,” Nicosia, Piazza Armerina or an earlier district name can be particularly useful.

I then assess the relevant municipal, archival and ecclesiastical sources and provide the proposed scope, terms and fee before work begins.
