Family history research
If your family originated in Caltanissetta or elsewhere in its province, I can investigate your ancestors and document family relationships through civil registration records, parish sources and historical archives.
I am Giuseppe Sorbello, founder of Sicilian Ancestry. Based in eastern Sicily, I carry out genealogy research throughout the island for clients in Italy and overseas. You can commission the work without traveling to Sicily.
My Genealogy Research Experience in the Province of Caltanissetta

I have researched families originating in Caltanissetta and several other municipalities in the province, reconstructing ancestral lines and locating historical documents connected with their family histories.
My work has included Santa Caterina Villarmosa, Vallelunga Pratameno, Caltanissetta and Riesi, as well as Montedoro, Marianopoli, Sutera, San Cataldo, Resuttano and Delia. The older name Terranova di Sicilia, historically used for present-day Gela, also appears in the documentary context of this area.
Families may have been recorded in several nearby municipalities over the generations. To establish relationships, I compare birth, marriage and death acts and examine the identities of parents and spouses together with dates and places of residence.
My experience covers family tree reconstruction and targeted searches for individual records. I have also undertaken civil documentation searches involving Santa Caterina Villarmosa, Caltanissetta and Resuttano.
I provide genealogical research throughout the province of Caltanissetta to clients in Sicily and descendants living abroad.
Where Are Caltanissetta Genealogy Records Kept?
Civil Registration Records
The State Archive of Caltanissetta holds a collection of civil registration records for municipalities in the area, with overall dates of 1820–1930. SIAS describes 11,122 registers, including births, marriages, deaths and other civil acts, but coverage varies considerably between municipalities.
For example, the collection description includes registers extending to 1930 for Caltanissetta, Riesi, Resuttano, Santa Caterina Villarmosa and Vallelunga, while the series described for Butera, Mazzarino and Terranova in the same collection end in 1865. The overall dates therefore cannot be applied to every locality. Official records must be requested from the appropriate municipal Civil Registry Office, even when digitized historical copies exist.
Parish Registers and Diocesan Archives
For generations preceding civil registration, parish records may document baptisms, marriages and burials. Relevant ecclesiastical jurisdictions vary by municipality and period, including the Diocese of Caltanissetta and neighboring dioceses that historically covered parts of the territory.
I identify the appropriate parish or church archive for the time in question; a town’s current administrative province does not determine where all its earlier ecclesiastical records are held.
Other Historical Sources
When standard civil acts do not resolve a family connection, marriage supporting documents, notarial records, military draft lists and municipal collections may provide additional evidence. Their usefulness depends on the period and on identifying information already established.
Digitized collections, including FamilySearch’s Caltanissetta civil registration material, can be a useful starting point. Their overall dates do not guarantee that every act is present, available to view or indexed by name.
Historical Place Names in the Caltanissetta Area
An older document naming Terranova may refer to Terranova di Sicilia, now Gela; the correct archival series must then be checked for the year concerned. The shorter name “Vallelunga” likewise needs historical context before it can confidently be identified as Vallelunga Pratameno.
For families linked with Santa Caterina Villarmosa, Resuttano and Caltanissetta, I examine each event in its own location and use names, relationships and chronology to connect the generations rather than relying on surname matches.

Genealogy Services in the Province of Caltanissetta

Family Tree Research
Starting from an identified ancestor, I can trace earlier generations and reconstruct family relationships supported by historical records. My family tree services offer different levels of research. Depending on the project and the records found, the final materials include a genealogy research report, family tree and digital copies of original sources. The depth of any family line depends on the surviving evidence.

Italian Record Retrieval and Citizenship Documents
You can commission the search for one or more birth, marriage or death records, even if you only know an approximate time frame. The work may include identifying the appropriate office, preparing document requests and checking the records received. Official certificates and extracts are issued by the competent public authorities.
For Italian citizenship applications, I offer a dedicated document research and retrieval service. It does not include legal advice or an assessment of citizenship eligibility.

Targeted Archival Research
If you already have a partial family tree, or need to verify one specific connection, I can investigate an individual, family, record or locality without undertaking a complete genealogical reconstruction. Research may involve digital collections, enquiries to record repositories and, where necessary and possible, in-person archive visits. DNA findings can also be considered through the appropriate specialist service alongside documentary evidence.
How to Start Your Caltanissetta Family History Research
Send the ancestor’s name, any approximate dates and the town of origin, together with known parents’ or spouses’ names. If your records refer to “Terranova” or “Vallelunga,” please include the wording and dates exactly as shown.
I assess which collections and offices are relevant, then agree on the research scope, cost and terms with you before starting.
